Information about Color Guard

The BYU Color Guard is a group of 25-30 women who have experience and training with flags, rifles, and other visual equipment. Before auditioning, applicants must have previously submitted an INTENT TO AUDITION FORM. More information regarding auditions will be sent to you on March 1 from the color guard director. The Intent to Audition form can be completed at any time prior to OR after admission to BYU.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:

FLAG BASICS

32 counts of drop spins

32 counts of DOUBLE TIME

32 counts of CARVES

8 SINGLE TOSSES

8 ONE AND A HALF TOSSES

8 horizontal or Parallel tosses

MOVEMENT BASICS

8 chaînés

(shu-nae) turns on each side

8 battements

(straight leg kicks) on each side

8 sautÉs

(straight leg jumps from one leg landing on the same leg) on each side

8 chassÉs

(step-together-step) on each side

8 brush leaps

(leaping keeping legs straight from floor to extended position) on each side

There are three opportunities to audition for the Color Guard:

  • April live auditions
  • June live auditions
  • Video audition (due in July)

Those attending the live audition will participate in a clinic teaching the basics of flag and movement. These basics include but are not limited to the list above. A short routine will also be taught.

Positions are awarded as qualified players audition and announcements of membership and scholarship awards will be sent within a few weeks after your audition date.

After receiving admissions to BYU, and as you receive notification of acceptance into the band, you can register for the marching band class (Music 322R, Section 1). Registration is through myMap on your myBYU account.
